Culturally Inclusive and Contextually Appropriate Instructional Practices: Rethinking pedagogical perspectives, practices, policies and experiences in ECE programs
2020

This was the intro piece to a special edition of the Journal of Research in Childhood Education, 34:1, 2-5. Questions to ask regarding our own practice: Is it culturally appropriate? Is it contextually appropriate? And, is it child appropriate? This special edition invites educators to consider local cultures and contexts while designing experiences for young children.  What might work in classroom B might NOT work in classroom E! More rationale as to why we must continually reflect on our practice!!!  #teaching #DAP #diversity #learning #equity

Are Fairy Tales Still Useful to Children?
2008

Couple things here - this is an old link and the form to fill out to access the interview is no longer secure - do what you will with that.  Zipes' thoughts down towards the bottom of the page though are still very much worth the read.  Then, if you are so inclined, search his name JACK ZIPES on YouTube... better carve out a couple days!  It's a rabbit hole of amazingness that is worth falling into and you might just be a little sad when you decide to climb back out!  #fairytales #stories #books #reading

The role of doll play in language development
2022

I happened upon this article while reading a newsletter that covers the happenings of the toy industry. The part that caught my eye was this: research found children talked more about others’ thoughts and emotions, a concept known as internal state language (ISL), when playing with dolls than while playing tablet games.  I mean we know this, right?!?  But I just love love love when someone does the math to prove it.  Access the full study here.   More fuel for our #play fire!  #toys #learning #DAP #screens #technology
