Hugs, Not Drugs

This is a bit lengthy and quite dated.  Of Note: there is no publication date provided, but it references stats from the 1990s so while I wouldn't advise quoting the numbers, the general overarching premise is timely: the wildest colts make the best horses.  Are we medicating to truly assist? Or to increase compliance within a broken system?  #teaching #learning #DAP #movement

Making the Most of the Mix!

Many of you know that Lisa is a vigilante mixed age grouper!  Whatever ages can legally be together in one room (it varies from place to place) is what she is going to do! This is a list of the resources Lisa tapped into as she wrote the Mixed Ages paper that she presents during the workshop of the same title.  You will find most of these individual articles here in the resources section of the website if you want to explore the topic further! #handouts #mixedages #teaching #DAP

Prekindergarteners Left Behind: Expulsion Rates in State Prekindergarten Systems
2005

Boys were over four times as likely to be expelled as girls, and African-American preschoolers were about twice as likely to be expelled as preschoolers of European descent. Although a pattern of particular risk for expulsion with African-American students has been demonstrated during K-12, the pattern of disparity appears to begin much earlier.  #teaching #learning #equity #implicitbias #expulsion

On Fairy Stories
1938

Here is the full text of the essay Tolkein presented (in an abbreviated form) in 1938 at St. Andrews, Scotland.  A couple of my favorite quotes: "If fairy story as a kind is worth reading at all it is worthy to be written for and ready by adults."  And, "It may be better for them (children) to read some things, especially fairy stories, that are beyond their measure rather than short of it. Their books like their clothes should allow for growth, and their books at any rate should encourage it." #books #stories #fairytales #reading
