The Theory of Multiple Intelligences
From the horse's mouth! I first came across this as a stand alone article, I now see that it is Chapter 24 of The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence. #theorists #learning #teaching
Why good teachers allow a child’s mind to wander and wonder
Our educational climate is often inhospitable to instigating a sense of wonder. #teaching #learning #creativity
Behind the findings of the Tennessee pre-K study that found negative effects for graduates
After I read this one I wrote on the top of the page, first do no harm. We KNOW that #play is what needs to be happening. Why do we (not present company "we" but I think you know what I mean!) insist on trying to get different results???? We (the same "we") must stop dismissing data because we don't like the results! #DAP #teaching #learning #Vanderbilt #Tennessee
A Basic Introduction to Child Development Theories
I am including this document as it presents some names that are not typically included in a "basic intro to the theorists" resource; and I liked that. #DAP #teaching #learning #theorists
In The News: A book review of Being Child Centered
While the journal ceased publication in 2020, they continue to provide their articles as an archived resource and in the summer of 2020 Louise Parks, then editor of the Texas Child Care Quarterly, shared a review of my book Lisa Murphy on... Being Child Centered with my editor at Redleaf Press, as well as some humbling words for which I will be forever grateful:
I’m delighted that we were able to include a review of On being Child Centered by Lisa Murphy. I’ll confess to laughing out loud (and shedding not a few tears) as I read Ms. Murphy’s wise and witty words, and longing for my days back in the classroom with eager, curious, and energetic three-year-olds. In a spectacular amalgam of Lilian Katz and Vivian Paley (my ECE heroes) Murphy calls educators to task (Katz) with anecdotes and examples (Paley) that are accessible, meaningful, and empowering of both adults and the children in their care. Can you tell this is one of my all-time favorites?!

Stop Trying to Make Kids “Ready” for Kindergarten
Another opportunity to (re)consider what we mean by readiness. #DAP #pushdown #play #teaching #learning
The Tennessee Pre-K Debate: Spinach Vs. Easter Grass
Another great article from when the preliminary Vanderbilt Study data was released (2015). The quote that caught everyone'e eye: "It's like saying spinach is really good for you," Farran says, "but we can't afford spinach. But here, I've got this Easter grass. Maybe that will be just as good."
Ouch. #DAP #play #learning #teaching #Vanderbilt #Tennessee
The Apple Demo
This handout will teach YOU how to do The Apple Demo with a group! Why is it important? It is a very very strong visual exercise that reinforces the importance of the real in early childhood environments - NOT dittos NOT worksh*ts NOT flashcards! Memorize the steps and then take your audience through the different ways children might experience an apple. This is a great activity to do with parents at back to school night! #handouts #DAP #teaching #learning #play #pushdown #parenting
Missed seeing Lisa demo this one? Maybe want to watch it again? Got a DVD player? Lisa has DVDs of all her workshops! #oldschool
The Changing Function of the Fairy Tale
It's impossible to define a fairy tale as a literary genre because it has become more of a cultural institution than anything else. #fairytales #stories #reading #books

A Randomized Control Trial of a Statewide Voluntary Prekindergarten Program on CHildren's Skills and Behaviors through Third Grade
This 2015 report provides preliminary findings from the longitudinal Vanderbilt Study, which started in 2009. This study set out to identify whether or not children who participate in Tennessee PreK programs make greater gains than children who don't. #teaching #learning #DAP #pushdown
