We know the many benefits of risky play for young children - but are all children being afforded opportunities to engage in this kind of play? Disabled children tend to be over-protected and have their abilities underestimated. Additionally, "accessibility" is not in itself sufficient to ensure the quality of the play experience.  #inclusion #equity #outside #movement #recess

A 2018 study estimated that 33.3% of all children were exposed to at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE). ACEs include abuse, household challenges, neglect, drug use or mental illness in the house, parental separation or divorce, incarcerated family members and witnessing domestic violence.  It's important to note that adversity isn't limited to these categories;  housing insecurity, racism, medical trauma, natural disasters and, I would add COVID all can contribute to a child experiencing trauma as a result of the stress of these examples of adversity.  This booklet provides a general over view of trauma and behavior, what ECEs need to know about trauma, how ECEs can promote resilience, understanding trauma informed care, and the intersection between disparity, equity and trauma.  #trauma #ACES #equity #care

Why cute is still a four-letter word:

1) cute activities insult children's intellects

2) cute activities mistake doing with learning

3) cute activities often miseducate

4) cute activities undermine professionalism

5) cute activities frequently undermine educational equity

Instead:

1) pose real questions

2) ally with children: believe in them, strive to understand, identify with them

3) share responsibility: wonder together, set high expectations, help children in their choice making
